Sterling silver jewelry has become an integral part of fashion jewelry.  It has a long history (centuries) of being used in the design of fashion adornment in addition to its other utilitarian applications and use as a form of currency.  It has, during this past century, taken on a greater interest with both the fashion wise and the collector.    

For any collector of sterling jewelry it will soon become apparent that origin of the manufacturers, designers, and regions where a piece was produce can make one become somewhat of a sleuth.  The fineness standard mark varies from country to country; with some countries having multiple numbers used within the silver fineness index.  Having solely a silver fineness number alone, may not be of help in determining the origin of a piece without taken in consideration other makers marks, styles or construction techniques.
